Sport4children
does not set out to train the olympians of the future. They are intended to be inclusive of all children, of all ages, sizes and abilities, with the principal aim of ensuring an enjoyable, safe, confidence–building activity. The role of sport and exercise in creating a healthy individual is paramount, with discussion activities before warm–up and after cool–down.
Our activities follow the guidelines of The National Curriculum for PE.
The targets of each club, whatever the activity, will be:
- acquiring and developing skills
- selecting and applying skills
- evaluating and improving performance
- knowledge and understanding of fitness and health
Our sports activities take children through levels 1 – 4 of the National Curriculum:
At KS1 most children will have attained Levels 1 and 2 of the National Curriculum and will be able to:
- copy, repeat and explore simple skills and actions with basic control and coordination
- start to link these skills and actions in ways that suit the activities
- begin to show some understanding of simple tactics and basic compositional ideas
- talk about differences between their own and others’ performance and suggest improvements
- talk about and understand how to exercise safely
At KS2 most children will have attained Levels 3 and 4 of the National Curriculum and will be able to:
- select, use and link skills, actions and ideas appropriately, with coordination and control,
accurately and appropriately - show that they understand tactics and composition by starting to vary how they respond
- show precision, control and fluency
- compare and comment on skills, techniques and ideas used in their own and others’ work, and use this understanding to improve their performance
- know why warming up beforehand is important and
explain and apply basic safety principles in preparing for exercise - describe what effects exercise has on their bodies, and how it is valuable to fitness and health.
Some children may well progress further and be able to:
- select and combine their skills, techniques and ideas and apply them accurately and appropriately, consistently showing precision, control and fluency
- draw on what they know about strategy, tactics and composition
- analyse and comment on skills and techniques and how these are applied in their own and others’ work
- modify and refine skills and techniques to improve their performance
- explain how the body reacts during different types of exercise, and warm up and cool down in ways that suit the activity
- explain why regular, safe exercise is good for their fitness and health.
Activities offered
The flexibility of our club leaders and the inclusive nature of our sports clubs mean that we are able to offer a wide range of activities, with current groups offering everything from Acro–dance and gym to football and basic martial arts. Our gym classes are deliberately called “Gymfit”: we deliberately offer floor–based exercises only, which carry a minimum risk and which is, in fact, all that is called for in the PE National Curriculum.
